CHAPTER TEN

"Two heads are better than one."

Sunday morning, the yellow police tape was gone from the corner housing the train station and the entrance to the mine. Thanks to nicer weather and a long holiday weekend, The Park was packed. Without Chuck to operate the ride, Parker assigned his men to take shifts driving the train, so all the attractions were up and running. The guests were in good spirits and enjoying themselves, unaware of the somber state of mind hanging over the rest of us like a dark storm cloud. I had to give the staff and actors credit for keeping a smile on their faces, despite the fear and confusion in the air.

As promised, I called Ava on my lunch break. She had one class this morning and was free until late afternoon. The tutoring job gave her a lot of free time, but I think she would have preferred to be at The Park today with me.

"Any news?" she asked without bothering to say hello.

"Well," I said as I took a bite of the tuna salad sandwich I'd packed this morning and then chewed around my food as I spoke. "Chuck signed out at six as usual last night, but then he went to the Watering Hole for dinner. He didn't have any family in town other than a half sister who works nights cleaning buildings, so he usually eats here."

"Are you serious?" Ava sounded appalled. "How could he afford to eat out every night?"

"He gets a good deal with his employee discount," I explained and wondered if she realized as an employee she got fifteen percent off when she ate at The Park. "Anyhow, whoever killed Chuck used the same kind of knife as the one used to kill William. They won't know for sure until the lab work is finished, but they suspect whoever was responsible wiped any prints clean."

"So did anyone see him after he ate?" Ava asked.

"Yes, he played pool with a few of the other employees and didn't leave until around ten. He told one of the guys he wanted to oil parts on the train before he went home. Jack thinks he was working on the train when he saw something he wasn't meant to see. No one saw him after he left the pub. His truck was in the parking lot and the lights were on at his station, so they assume when he left the pub he went back to his office but got sidetracked by something outside."

"What did Jack mean by 'saw something he wasn't meant to see'?" Ava sounded skeptical, which was out of character.

"Just between you and me," I said with caution in my voice since I didn't want to spread rumors. "Jack feels like something illegal is taking place after hours."

"Illegal?"

Her innocent gasp put a smile on my face. I loved my sister and hoped she never changed.

"Like drugs, you mean?"

"Possibly," I answered and then took a sip from my soda can. "Although I can't imagine William or Chuck being involved in something so dreadful.
